A Swift Kick in the Ass: Part 2

Okay, so I may have over done it a little bit this time. But I think I did what I needed to, to remind myself what this is all about. The past few times that I had run I was still running 3.1 miles or 5k (whichever you prefer) but I was only doing that. so my workouts were only lasting about 30 min or so. so what I decided to do was extend my workout to last an hour. but still running the same distance total. So what I did was run for a mile, walk for half a mile, so I totaled 3 miles running and 1.5 miles walking. I cant believe the difference the additional time made even though I was walking during it. It felt like I had just run it all by the end. I burned over 500 Calories as well. Go me!

I think I am going to do this for a while and see what my results are. I know that extending my actual workout by half an hour has to do some good. If anything it will get my heart and lungs back in shape and get me ready to run for the entire time. but who knows...

Good for you. On Monday, I am going to start something similar to prepare for my first 10K. Thanks again for the inspiration.

Welcome back, Greg - it's great to hear from you! I have no doubt that you can do whatever you put your mind to. Like Big Clyde said, you were one of the bloggers that actually inspired me to start running and start my own blog. I have been doing the run/walk routine for a few months now and I'm liking it (I would say 'loving', but that would be too strong, lol). I usually run for 5 minutes, walk a bit, run another 5 minutes and just do that for an hour. I've thought about setting a distance or time goal, but to be honest, I think I'd be happy if that's all I ever do. An hour of exercise is an hour of exercise. ;)

Hi Greg! Haven't posted on your blog but I found it some time back and linked to it, as I see you did the same. Thanks! Anyway, two schools of thought here -- if the 5K workouts were just taking too much toll on you, I agree that increasing your time to cover the same distance is probably a good move until you get acclimated to the work. If you were handling the work OK, though, different story; exercise and body transformation is all about pushing yourself. I'm always aiming to run either further or faster -- one way or the other, something's going to burn! Whatever the case, keep on keepin' on brother!

Congratulations on making a decision to get back after it. It is easy to quit, but hard to come back. Early this year I started out walking and running after I had dropped quite a bit of weight. I was able to increase my running little by little. Sooner than I thought, I was doing not only 5K distances, but 10K on a regular basis. Even though it wasn't an original goal, I completed a half marathon last month. One thing that really helped me was monitoring my heart rate. I found out the day I got it that I was pushing to hard during my running and it would force me to walk. The next time I ran, I watched my heart rate and was able to increase by about 25% that run. Keep after it Greg, it is not just about looking great, but being healthy and feeling great because of it. Good luck.
